Wings vs Av's - Rivalry is far from dead...
If anybody watched the "old" Detroit Red Wings shutout the Av's in their own building yesterday afternoon, you'll clearly see the Rivlary wasn't dead - perhaps just in hibernation for a little while.
The 3rd period all hell broke loose 2 minutes after Brendon Shanahan scored his 500th career goal on Patrick Roy. Perhaps Waaaaaah was still upset about that when Kirk Maltby got thrown into the net with Waaaaaaah and Waaaaaah took it upon himself to pick a fight. Hasek left the crease at the other end of the ice to help out in the malee' that began in the Av's zone, where it was a 6-5 scrum.
Ref's kept the two goalies from going at, but Red Wings young rookie forward Sean Avery BEAT THE SNOT out of Avs defenseman Pascal Trepanier. Av's end up with a powerplay out of the whole ordeal but could not put the puck past Hasek.
The last 4 minutes of the game got ugly again as Av's Mike Keane chose to run Hasek in Net and Chelios made him pay for it by cross-checking him 5 consecutive times in the back before the Ref's called a penalty while the Av's were already on the powerplay. Chelios had the book thrown at him (as usual) and got 4 minutes for cross-checking, 2 minutes for slashing, 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct, 10 minute misconduct and a game misconduct.
The Av's still couldn't put the puck past Hasek with the 5-3 advantage - even as they pulled Roy.
This is the type of passion and momentum builder that is going to bring the Wings into the playoffs. They locked up the Western Conference with that win as well, guaranteeing home-ice throughout the first 3 rounds
