Yes, you get credit for the ones you already have. I just checked your profile (that's where you can see how referrals you have) and you have 8 (a decent amount, no less). So, you will most definitely get to keep your avatar next to your name.

BTW, I saw that in your profile your occupation is "INTERNET". What part of the Internet do you do for a living?

may be a stupid question but....how do you track referrals? I sent e-mails to a few people but I'm not sure if they joined. Is there a sure fire way to make sure when they do it shows?
