Lightbulb Would you like to see the NHL expand their rink size to Olympic scale?

It seems the game is a bit more open... more offensive skills can be showcased...

I know it'll never happen... but would you like to see the NHL increase their rink size to Olympic dimensions?

    Thumbs up

I voted to make the rinks olympic size, But as you said, it will never happen

Bigger Ice=Less seats=Less income....No owner is going to want that.

I think they current size of the NHL rink is fine....what I would LOVE to see is the elimination of the two-line pass like we've been seeing in Olympic play! Love those long passes!

I would like to see that. That would be interesting. I agree with Frez, I love the elimination of the center line in olympic play.

IMHO, a standardization of the rinks is a good idea, and using the Olympic standard makes a lot of sense.

Hockey is at it's best when it's open and moving quickly. The current grinding going on in the NHL, which promotes the dreaded trap, makes for boring hockey.

Again, I agree; but the discrepency between the better and worse teams in the league would be huge! It would be embarrassing to watch some of the expansion teams play some of the better puck handling teams.

... but... do we REALLY need to compensate for poor talent on weaker teams? I think expansion teams have to expect to suck... at least for a while.

Look at Ottawa. They were probably the worst EVER... now they are a solid team, after building.

I just think the NHL needs to defeat the trap and let the talent of the players show.

Well really what the NHL needs to do is eliminate at least 5 teams to strengthen the talent pool, but that's never gonna happen either.

Yeah... forget baseball... The NHL needs to contract.
I think they could get rid of Tampa Bay and Anaheim and nobody would even notice. Does the L.A. area really need two freakin' teams???

And why the hell does Nashville, Atlanta, and Columbus have teams anyway?
I'll tell you why... Cuz Buttman got kickbacks from the cities and owners.

In the amounts of money he probably received, I don't know that the term "kick-backs" is even appropriate!!

    LOL!

My guess is he's still trying to "knock it down" after seeing the ratings that the US-Canada Gold medal game got.

I disagree with that statement...Look at the 1996 Avs, 1st year in Colorado and they win the Stanley Cup!

And back to the point of this thread. I think if it was opened up to Olympic size, players would have a better chance of showing there stuff and prepare NHL players for the Olympics!

Uhhh dude... Colorado wasn't an expansion team.
Nice to see you know your team's history.

It's not the NHL's job to prepare players for the Olympics. F*** the Olympics! The players are paid to play in the NHL!

heheh... yeah, remember The Avs used to be the Quebec Nordiques... They already had a foundation with Sakic and the like....

Sorry guys when I think of "expansion" I think of a new team. And the colorado avalanche were a new team to COLORADO. Before they came to colorado they barely did any winning, but when they did arrive in colorado, they were the team to stop and still are.

Sorry for my "ignorance" I just misunderstood.

The people of Quebec got robbed. That team would have won that cup regardless of whether they were in the east or the west.
I agree with Case on this point. These guys get paid to play in the NHL. If Olympic medals are so important to these greedy "I've gotta win anything I can" mentallity players, they should retire, and play for their national teams.

Actually, they wouldn't have won the cup in Quebec. There's no way that Montreal would have traded Roy to Quebec. And there's no way that the Nordiques would have won the cup with the goaltending combo of Jocylin Thibault and Craig Billington.
