Red face NO POP UPS HERE

There are no pop-ups programmed on this site....not yet.

I am noticing lately that some pop-ups are programmed to "pop" a great length of time after a page loads so another site gets the "blame" for it. That might be the problem.

    Jason,

Frez and I were talking about that this afternoon. He got a really wierd one from MCI or Sprint with a phone floating across the screen. I also read an interesting article in Mobile Computing (free-be tech mag) where an author vents his dislike for the current in-your-face web ads.

Hey, at least they are being creative about them.

Without looking up or scrolling up, what is the ad banner that is on this site right now as you read this? Unless you are very perceptive, you probably didn't notice. This is the primary reason for pop-up ads. They want you to notice.

I wonder if one day you will have to click an ad or at least see one in between each page that you visit on a site, kind of like a TV commercial. Wouldn't surprise me if it happened.

I think you're right man. Banner ads are way too easy to ignore and I too wouldn't be surprised when they day comes that you must look at a full ad page for 30 seconds before getting to the main site.

And who only knows what will happen when/if broadband becomes universal.

Yeah, I have been thinking of that a lot lately. I think 30 seconds is a little too long, but think about it...

TV has been profitable ONLY because of advertisements (to my knowledge). How many times do you watch TV and they have to "pause for this short message from our sponsor"? All the time, and we absorb those advertisments much better than an online banner ad. We don't mind them because we were raised knowing they were there.

As bradband gets more universal, ads online will get better with video an interactivity. They will be more entertaining and catchy and I think much more tolerable.

This way, the 'net will become profitable again and the gap between TV and the Internet will shrink a great deal or even disappear just like Bill Gates predicted a long time ago.

Ads will never be tolerable. I HATE ads. That's why god invented cable TV.
