Panthers forward Pavel Bure has been traded to the New York Rangers for Filip Novak, Igor Ulanov, a first round pick in 2002, and a switch of second round picks in 2003.

Now If we could just ship out Nedved, I'd be happy.

Bure-Lindros-Fleury maybe? Sounds good to me.

OK, so who is this Novak dude? He's obviously the key to this trade, cuz Ulanov is no better than a #4 or 5 d-man.
Although, Ulanov HAS been able to knock the snot outta Lindros in the past... Remember the Philly-Tampa playoff series a few years back?


Look at how far Bure's value has dropped. A couple years ago, it took Jovavnovski to get him...

Oh yeah, he came cheap. It seems Florida wanted him out worse than New York wanted him. I think New York's gonna be shopping for a new GM and coach if they don't make the playoffs, and guess what?, it's not looking good with or without Bure.

Ulanov was playing for Hartford, and Novak's value dropped a lot from when he was first drafted. Honestly, I dont think Novak is gonna be any more than Mediocre in the NHL.

The playoffs are not lookin good, but this gives a little burst of optimism.

A new coach, and Kasperitis would be great.

The premier goalscorer in the NHL the last couple of years goes for an unproven prospect, a journeyman loose cannon and some draft picks that may or may not be capable of playing in the NHL one day.

That's to which the deal that sent Pavel Bure, the two-time winner of the Maurice Richard Trophy as the league's top goalscorer, from the Florida Panthers to the New York Rangers amounts.

That is economic reality of the NHL these days, the same reality that saw the Pittsburgh Penguins trade star Jaromir Jagr (himself the subject of trade rumours now) to the Washington Capitals for three prospects last summer.

The Bure deal is the biggest so far in the leadup to Tuesday's 3 p.m. EST trade deadline. He went to the Rangers, struggling to make the playoffs, for prospect defenceman Filip Novak, the 64th player chosen in the 2000 draft; veteran defenceman Igor Ulanov - who had been banished to the minors for undisciplined play - and an assortmant of draft picks (a first rounder this year, most importantly).

The most important aspect in the Bure deal that went down around 6 p.m. Monday night, is not what the Florida Panthers wound up with in the deal, but what they are now without.

It is assumed at this point the Rangers are assuming all the responsibility for the remainder of Bure's contract - $20 million over the next two years, $31 million over the next three if an option for the third year is picked up - leaving the Panthers with that money to spend.

Bure scored 58 and 59 goals for the Panthers the last two seasons before slumping this year. What do the Panthers have to show for all those goals? A first-round playoff loss, just 66 points last season and another spring on the outside looking in this year.

They want to go in a new direction.

Dumping Bure's salary is going to free up that money to take a good run in the free agent market this summer with the main target being winger Bill Guerin, the Boston Bruins' power forward who will be an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Panthers coach Mike Keenan coached Guerin last year with the Bruins and the word is they get along.

Guerin is scoring more than Bure this year (35-22), can likely be had for less than Bure's salary of $10 million for next year (likely more in the $8 million range) and brings a physical and leadership dimension that Bure cannot begin to approach.

You can't evaluate this deal until the Panthers spend that money this summer.

Bure is the first big name to get moved as this year's trade deadline approaches, but he might not be the last.

The Rangers definitely got the better talent in the deal but this trade was about payroll and Panthers fans have 10 million reasons to be happy about this deal. If the Panthers go out and buy 2 or 3 free agents in the 3 mill range they will have a much better team plus save a mill or two.

Its always been my view that Bure doesn't add anything to a team, I know this is all old hat but the guy plays for himself, more so than even Lindros.

So now the Rangers (no offense inteded to their fans) have the two most spineless players in the NHL (actually I have to give credit to Lindros, much as an Avs fan I hate the guy you have to be very brave, or stupid to play after what, 8, now counting the minor one this year, concussions) and the funny part of it is that they think that they are going to be able to make the playoffs with this lineup.

Look at the wings, how many out and out pure goalscorers are there??? Federov, maybe but even he knows how to play D!!!

Richter best be on his game for the rest of the season he is going to be seeing a LOT more shots.

Clever, clever panthers and it took how long to realise this......

Will Bure fit in NY - well, we'll see won't we?

I don't see Sathers reasoning on bringing Bure to the Rangers at all. This is a ONE-WAY player who is a defensive liability. This is a player who pisses off team mates by taking long shifts and not picking up anybody defensively - put can put the puck in the net.

Is this what the Rangers need now? They should be building team defense instead of trying to out-score their opponants every night and win that way. If I was Richter I would be VERY pissed off and demanding a trade to St. Louis.

They've got till 3pm today to improve their defense - let's see what happens.

Federov, blistering speed, can put the puck in the net almost whenever he wants, has had to learn D under Bowman... that was my point. .....

Robataille - maybe a pure goalscorer, not really, had to learn D in LA or they'd never have gone as far as they did.

Hull, he came from Dallas - there is no such thing as a pure goal scorer from dumbass, Ken Hitchcock wouldn't have allowed it....

Shanahan, --- ok now maybe you have a point.

But all of those players are willing to score goals from within a system and to pick up their defensive assignments.

Panthers just got a LOT better, Rangers just started giveing up more goals per game, so they'd better score a TON more....
