But what happened to you in the playoffs.... and those guys are even older now.... how old do you have to be to get a pension from the NHLPA???? Maybe thats how Illich is planning on staying under the salery cap when they bring it in (which they will soon enough)
Trivia Questions...
Who is the only coach to beat Bowman twice in a row in best of seven series (that is win two best of 7's back to back against him)??
In the last 4 times the Wings have met the Avs in the Playoffs how many have the Wings won???
Who is going to go out in the first round this year after the lose a few guys to injurys (they have a team of OAP's so that shouldn't take to much guess work) and then I'll hear about it all year,,,, we'd have won the cup if we hadn't lost......Yserman and .... and ...?
....
end of trivia questions, no offense intended to any Wings fans out there, I just love winding you guys up. Its all in fun.

All time record vs. the Av's 14-10-1. So you know, the Av's aren't the youngest team in the league either.
Which team currently has more hall-of-famers?
Which team is going to win the President's Trophy?
Which team has the best coaching staff?
Which team has more 500 & 600 goal scorers?
Which team is kicking your chrome beltbuckle wearing a$$e$ in the standings?
What is the series standings this season??
Which team has more cups all-time??
See how that works both ways.

Kind of an obligation to give Wings fans **** when you meet them...
Who has the best goaltender of all season who just happens to be haveing the best year of his outstanding carrer? and who just happens to play for the playoffs???
Who has a goaltender with 4 Cups and 3 Conns??? One for the thumb baby one for the thumb......
Who has the best defense in the league?
What wins cups??
How many games do you have to play to score 500 - 600 goals?
Who took a MAJOR injury (the best 2 way forward in the game) last year and STILL won the cup last year?
Who has the most young skilled players??? (me thinks Detroit has like, er, 1, now that takes impressive drafting skills that does.... wow)
Who has the GM who will get his man at the TDL? (he always does)
Keep it comeing boy, regular season means nothing, we all know that....... you can have the Presidents Trophy, we'll still kick your butts out of the playoffs....
Wings aren't the best team in the league right now that would be the LA Kings, they just have had the best season.

Umm, go look at the standings again and tell me who has 102 points.
Another Avsfan
03-14-2002, 12:10 PM
102 points, that means NADA, just means that they've been the most CONSISTENTLY good team, it doesn't make them the best, not by a long way. On any given night the Wings could get trashed by a hot team, and on that night, they wouldn't be the best team in the league. The Kings right now are hot, Potvin is like Roy, he gets out of bed in the morning cos he knows that one day he is going to get himself into a position to win the Cup.
Too bad for Potvin there is another goaltender who happens to be a little bit better who feels the same.
Roll on the playoffs.
The number one reason why the Wings wont win the Cup.
Even if they make it through the Western Confrence they haven't got a hope of getting all those old (old = more easily injured) players through. Look for them to lose Yserman for a least a series here and there and prehaps Shanahan ..... who knows....
Anyways, the west is going to be a battle, the east wont, the team that comes out of the west better have LOTS of depth and the abiltiy to call up quality players from the minors, they'd also better be young and not so easily injured.
Just my opinion, I could of course be wrong......

I think you have a great misconseption of what old is and how resiliant they are. You think Chelios is more prone to get injured because he's older now? That guys playing better than he has in 5 years!! When you talk about an old team you sound like your thinking Colorado's average age is 20 years younger than the Wings. That's not the case. If that were true, both teams would be in trouble because both the goaltenders are "older" and near the end of their careers.
Age didn't stop the Wings last year, it was poor goaltending and that problem is more than fixed this year. Don't forget that for as good as a year Roy is having, Hasek has ten more wins.
Another Avsfan
03-14-2002, 05:30 PM
Colorado is about 4 years per player younger than the Wings.
The Wings have the oldest player in the game.
The Oldest player in Colorado is Patrick Roy born in 1965.
The Wings have 8 Players born that year or before.
Goaltenders don't apply to the age equation, when was the last time you saw a goaltender get checked or give a check?
Now lets talk about old.....
Last year in the playoffs goaltending was the problem for Detroit? Poor (old) Ozbad gets blamed for everything, lets see what NHL.com had to say about the matter... (Oh and why is he haveing such a great season in New York then????)
"After commanding victories on its home ice, Detroit led the series 2-0. But injuries to offensive powers Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan kept them out of most of the series. The Red Wings were forced to play Darren McCarty and Chris Chelios, even though both were injured. "
and Mr Bowman...
"I don't think we've ever had a team as banged-up as this one, especially going into a series," ....
so yeah, bad goaltending, that was the problem, CLEARLY.....
Age is a factor in getting injured like it or not....

I completely agree with your last quote there after the Wings were eliminated by the LA Kings last season. I thought Osgood was playing pretty well in the playoffs. You can't expect a goalie to stop EVERY shot when he's not getting any help from his defense. And don't even get me started on Marty LaPointe and his STUPID penalites!
The whole Osgood saga started earlier last season when he just went through an incredible slump that backup goalie Manny Legace was basically the starter. Osgood seemed to always let in soft goals - he was good for one a game and it was time for a change. The 2 toughest positions to be in in Detroit is either a starting goaltender or a quarterback.
Your obviously not from Detroit, so you wouldn't know the history and passion the fans have here for the Red Wings dating back 76 years as part of the Orignal Six. It's intense - and it has been for 76 years of hockey.
I'm still going to have to disagree with you on why you keep mentioning the "age" factor here. Let's face it, if you win your a "Veteran" team and if you lose, your an "Old" team. It's been a very grueling season for the Wings this year - they had how many players in the All Star Game? (4) How many in the Olympics?? (11) and how many poinsts do they have in the League right now? (102). This certainly doesn't look like an "Old" team.
Age hasn't played a factor all season and it won't in the playoffs. Scotty Bowman is taking into account everything and developing his game play and practices to account for that.
At 40 years old Chelios is playing like a 21 year old and will be given serious consideration for the Norris. When is the last time Adam Foote played more than 30 games in a row without getting injured? Is it because of his age? No - but can you see my corolation here?
Great discussion! Good to finally see some Av's fans onboard :)

I don't see what's so great about Osgood's season in New York. He did have a pretty good start, but he's not looking as sharp lately.
And here we go with the age issue again. Chelios is a lot older than Foote, and yet he miraculously stays WAY healthier. And as for Larionov, hell yeah he's old, but he still has his spleen. Age doesn't have anything to do with it. Frez is right about the veteran/ old player fine line. We'll see this year. You just better keep kissing Roy's @ss, if not for him, you'd be looking up at Dallas in the standings!!
Both Roy and Hasek have missed significate games in their career due to injury. So, yeah, goaltenders do get hurt and take beatings.
Until the olympics, they looked like a bunch of dogs with a good goaltender.
Apparently, Lacroix disagrees with you about veteran players, otherwise, why would he have re-aquired Keane or aquired Borque from Boston last year? Let me tell you why my five year fan, VETERANS WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS.
I don't know why you're arguing anyway, looking at your location, in another couple years, you'll jump on someone elses bandwagon!!

I take offense at the comment,
" I don't know why your argueing anyways, look at your location in another couple of years, you'll jump on someone elses bandwagon."
1- I started supporting the Avs when I first came accross Ice Hockey when my little bro started playing, he is a goaltender and loves Patrick Roy (in 2000 when the Avs were playing the Wings in the playoffs, the Wings lost, remember, we went down and got him to sign an Avs jersey so that is says "To Matt best of luck PTR 33" (his signature looks like PTR 33...)) I wasn't sure if I wanted to support the Wings or the Avs, I got fed up of hearing about how great Bowman and the Wings were from the rest of my family so I support the Avs, I have since 97, even though the Wings won the cup in 97 and 98, did I change, no, suggesting that you have a monopoly on "true" fans in Detroit and that everyone else are "bandwagoners" is arrogant, ignorant, stupid and just what I'd expect.
A it happens I'm not from Detroit, but the rest of my family is, I don't watch/follow much Football, mainly because I got fed up of watching the Lions fail to perform as well as they should, but if you were to ask me I'd say I support the Lions even though my favourite teams to watch are the Vikings and the Titans.
I'd never suggest (and never have) that a team full of rookies is going to win the Cup, and there is only one rookie goaltender ever to have carried a team to the cup, obviously there is a balance to be struck between older "veteran" players and younger rookies and softmores. Personaly I think the Wings don't even begin to come close to the ideal. Veterans bring stability to a team, they don't get high after a big win (unless they just won the cup) and they don't get low after a big loss. Youngsters bring hunger and energy to a team and I think those are the critical attributes of a winning team.
I'm not saying that vets can't be desperate to win (eg. Bourque) but its a more common trait of youngsters. If you've been there and done that (and lets face it most of the Wings have) then you just can't capture the same drive that you had as a rookie. You reach your physical peak at arround 21-25 for men, that means that by the time you are 40 you are giving up a lot of jump on a 21 year old, you'd better have a lot of experience to make up for it. Even that wont be enough sometimes. Another advantage that rookies have is that they will be smarter, you reach your intelectual peak at about 17 that means that thereafter you don't have the same capacity to learn and reason, you have to rely on haveing seen problems before, that makes guys like Ilia Kovalchuk such effective scorers, they are smart, fast and most importantly inventive.
Its an interestin problem, if you are a GM you have to throw into the equation who you think bucks the trend, who you think still has some drive, but has the stability of a vet, who is more mature than his age, or who will get hot one night and be stone cold the nest (Foppa does that). I love PL because firstly he always gets his man and secondly he is a good judge of what will add to the team and what will not. Personaly if I were he I'd be going after Kasparitits at the TDL but thats just cos I love watching big hitting defensemen, (two of my favourite players are Blake and Stevens, behind Roy and Footer, defensemen rock, my top ten players would include about 5 defensemen 3 goaltenders Sakic and Forsberg) but I don't expect him to pick up a defenseman, he'll probably wind up not doing anything this year.
Ok I know I'm having a bit of a rant by this point but hey you don't have to read it if you don't want to...
The best thing about the west this year is the potential for fantastic matchups in the playoffs, 3 red hot goaltenders in Roy (1), Potvin(2) and Hasek(3) (Hasek is last cos he is haveing a good season but Potvin and Roy are the two who really get their teams where they are. All three have the capability to carry a team all the way to the championship against what is on paper a tougher opposition. Then we have defense, you always have to figure in the Blues when you start looking at these things, but then there is Footer, Blake, Chelios Lin... but more of this later my computing lecture just finished....

Relax dude, I'm just pushing your buttons. It's all in good fun. Like I said in another post, the way the playoff tree is shaking up this year, the Wings and the Av's could be facing Dallas and St. Louis in the first round. ANYTHING can happen.

Ah, yeah, its all cool, I tend to blow a fuse when people say stuff like that, gets kinda annoying spending five years hearing... "You only support the Avs cos they're going to win the Stanley Cup..."
Actually I don't think think (or rather I hope they don't .. ) the Stars will make the playoffs, if there is one team I like less than the Wings, its the Stars.
