Scotty Bowman will coach the World team at the Feb. 2 All-Star Game in Los Angeles, the NHL announced Wednesday. In essence, he won the honor because his Red Wings finished the first half of the season with the best record in the Western Conference.
Who coaches in the All-Star Game depends on Friday's standings. The coaches of the teams with the most and second-most points per game in the West will be the head and assistant coaches of the World, respectively. The coaches of the teams with the most and second-most points per game in the Eastern Conference will be the head and assistant coaches of the North American team, respectively.
Detroit and Chicago are guaranteed to be first and second in the West on Friday, so Bowman will coach the World, and the Blackhawks' Brian Sutter will assist him. Depending on what happens in the East by Friday, two of these three men will work with North America: Philadelphia's Bill Barber, Boston's Robbie Ftorek and Toronto's Pat Quinn.
