Been talking to some people and came up with a good question.

If every NHL team signed most of the players they wanted, and in the end all the teams used up their salary caps, isn't there going to be a lot of possibly skilled players stuck out in the cold without contracts?

I know most players will be signing for less now than in the past, and considering the 24 percent cut of the current contracts, there may be room for everyone.

I'm sure it's more detail involved than I expected, but is it possible that if you sign early, you are better off than someone that's gonna hold out?

Anyway, it's going to be an interesting scramble of rosters!

Then there will be a lot of players left hanging then. I'm sure they'll be able to find places to sign with in Europe like they did during the lockout.

What really will be a stinger too is that the salary cap is based on revenue. I believe the NHL is basing this years $39 million dollar salary cap on 1.8 billion in revenue. If nobody comes back to hockey this year, and they find their revenue goes down - the salary cap goes down. What happens to teams who are at the $39 million dollar salary cap?

There is also a limit as to what 1 player can make...

It's a percentage of the team cap, and no player can make more than that.

I forget what the % number was, but the dollar figure works out to be 7.8 million or so...

That would stop any team from paying "Player A" $25 millioon and having virtually nothing left for the rest of the team...

I think a LOT of the mid-level and/or older european players will just stay in europe if the salarys aren't much different. Why bother living in North America instead of your homeland when the lure of monster cash isn't there anymore?
If I were the Wings, I'd be very concerned about Dynamo making a better offer to Datsyuk than they can.
There was also talk about how Sidney Crosby is limited to $850,000/year for his first 3-year contract here in the NHL, but that he could get a $10,000,000 3-year deal in europe! Hell... as much as I'd like to play in the NHL, I'd go over and play anywhere in europe for that kind of a raise!

I'm pretty certain that the most a single player can make is 20% of the cap.
