The Chicago Blackhawks try to extend their unbeaten streak to nine games when they visit the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center in the back end of a home-and-home.
Chicago is 5-0-3 during its run, which is the longest since 1995-96, when it marched nine games without a loss (8-0-1) from December 17-January 2. On Tuesday at the United Center the Blackhawks posted a convincing 5-1 victory over the Kings, guided by the play of the Igor Korolev-Mark Bell-Steve Thomas line.
The unit combined for four goals and seven assists, as Korolev led the charge with two scores and two helpers. Bell added a goal and three assists, while Thomas added one and two.
Alexei Zhamnov also scored for Chicago, and Eric Daze extended his points streak to nine games with an assist. Daze. has seven goals and five assists during the run.
In goal, Jocelyn Thibault stopped 25-of-26 shots and improved to 7-2-3. The oft-maligned backstop has a 2.45 goals-against average and .903 save- percentage in 13 appearances this season.
Chicago visits Anaheim on Friday before returning to the United Center Sunday to open a four-game homestand against Detroit. The Hawks will try to reach .500 on the road tonight, as they are 2-3-1 on visiting ice.
Los Angeles actually took a 1-0 lead in Tuesday's tilt, as Bryan Smolinski beat Thibault 11:00 into the first period. Things, however, went down thereafter and Felix Potvin continued to struggle, surrendering four goals on 21 shots. Potvin, who fell to 3-8-1, was replaced by Jamie Storr to start the third period.
Potvin, last year's late-season hero for the Kings, has a 2.74 goals-against average and .891 save-percentage in 12 games.
LA has recently been hit hard by injuries, as forwards Zigmund Palffy and Adam Deadmarsh, and defenseman Aaron Miller all missed the game.
Newly acquired center Jason Allison, bothered by a leg injury himself, is off to a slow start with his new club, notching one assist in four games.
The Kings, 1-2-1-1 at the Staples Center, begin a five-game homestand tonight. They resume the set on Saturday against Atlanta.
Chicago is unbeaten in the last five meetings (2-0-3) with LA, but the Kings hold an 11-3-3 advantage in the last 17 meetings. The Blackhawks are 1-0-2 in their last three trips to Los Angeles
