If the game is still tied after five minutes of overtime, the winner will be determined by a shootout. No game will end in a tie.

A rule being pushed for in the NHL is the "no tie" concept where every game that is tied after 5 minutes of overtime will go into a shootout. I personally don't like this rule, as I hate shootouts because sometimes they get confusing. If they do end up doing shootouts for tie-breakers I think they should do it like College Footbal Overtime where you take turns and if the away team scores the home team has to score or they lose, or if the away team doesn't score and then the hometeam scores they win. That would be much more simpler and if the NHL does do shootouts I would like to see them done that way.

I can understand your concern, but I think NHL Hockey needs a major shot in the arm (pardon the pun). Shoot-outs, like them or not, are VERY exciting. I don't think anything gets people off their seat in sports like they do. I am all for it if they implement it in the regular season.. where games tend to drag. This should not be allowed in the play-offs, where if fans aren't excited they needed to get their bodies to a cementary because they have obviously died.

But I really find shootouts to be way too confusing to be exciting. Like if one team is up 3-1. You have alot whether to see a team's in position to win or not. Like I said doing it like college football overtimes would be much easier to follow or maybe even like a playoff series with the first team to score four goals wins, anything but the normal idiot structure of shootouts.

Well, I'm editing my post because I just thought about it, and I think if they go through the full five rounds without stopping that would be okay, as you would just have to look at the final tallies, or have one team do all five players and then the other team. Thoughts please?

I think shootouts are fun to watch, but I really don't thin kthey are fair to decide NHL games because:

You play 60 (65) minutes of real hockey, play to a draw, and then the whole game rests on somethign that is almost unrelated to what got you there.

If you are a team of sharpshooters, you have a HUGE advantage in a shootout vs a team that is built on defense. This one is hard for me to include, because I MUCH perfer the high-flying style of the late 80's and early 90's, but it is true, and unfair, IMHO.

While I agree it's extreme, there are just too many teams playing not to lose. Too many teams playing the trap and turning the game into fourth division soccer match with the speed and excitement of toddlers learning to walk.

Bah.. I'd love to see the NHL crackdown on obstruction FINALLY.. but I'd also love to win the lottery on Friday and I'm kinda split on which has a greater likelihood of happening.

The breakaway is hockey (and I think sports) most exciting play, and right now the game is in dire need of excitement. The regular season is unwatchable for a lot of hockey fans, unless the team playing is THEIR team. You don't see that in football where the fans watch whoever is playing on Sunday. Hockey needs that following if it wants to remain a major league.

Ya, but with the Overtime loss point setup, you dont have much to lose by trying to win (in Overtime anyway)...

I think the real issue, like you leaned toward, is the game is so mucked up with non-called obstructions, that 5 minutes, even 4-on-4, is almost not enough to expect anyone to score in anymore.

I think shoot outs are something that should be experimented with slowly. Throw them in exhibiton games before the regular season (if we freaking have one  ). And make them part of the All Star game if it ends in a tie.

Where the game has to change is during the 60 minutes (that seem to drag on too many nights) in the regular season. Calling obstruction is fine, but the parade to the penalty box can destroy the flow of the game too.

Perhaps calling more penalty shots during the game for guys getting hauled down with the puck in the offensive zone is the way to go. Although right now, I just want to hear that we are going to have a season with training camps in a couple of months.. oh and an awesome World Cup tourney thrown in.

Alright back to playing Fifa on my Gamecube! Hurray for Thursdays off! :D

But I still say they need a new format.

Update: OH HELL YEAH!! Just got the latest version of Fifa, Fifa '04, and I'm rocking it here. The first day I played it so much I was scared I was having a seizure for a minute! I've been playing career mode with Manchester United and here's been my best game so far...

Manchester United vs. Leicester City- LC was up 1-0 but I evened it up in the 88th freakin minute with a corner kick goal, and then won on my first shot in sudden death. Damn that rocked.

Nothing like winning when the clock has stopped at 90:00.

Back on topic: I haven't played a game where it's gone to penalty shoot out yet.. but needless to say I am stoked to play one :D

You're not gonna believe this, but here's my next game after typing this:

Manchester United vs. Newcastle- Newcastle up 1-0, and I get a penalty kick at 90:00, score, and then no-one scores in sudden death, and then we have a shootout and I win 5-4.

Here's another great game...

Manchester United vs. Birmingham- Tied 2-2 we go to a shootout, and their up 5-4 and I god damn miss the last kick and they win with a shocker.

I decided to have a Portugal vs. Turkey world game for fun, and we tied 3-3 and went to a shootout and I killed them 3-0 in the shootout.

And on another note, I decided to pretend to have a contract dispute with Manchester United, so I left the whole league and moved to Scotland to play with the Rangers. Lol, it was actually me quiting and starting a new season, but what the hell. My first Celtics-Rangers game in the season... Celtics 6-2 Rangers, but I'm gonna get them next time.

Now if only the NHL games were this fun.
