Please pardon my ignorance. I have asked this question to countles hockey people and no one has been able to answer it. what exactly does habs stand for?

The farmers and settlers of the Montreal area were called "habitants".
The way that the team got the name attached to them is kinda folklore now. A moron reporter from the US asked a Canadian journalist what the H stood for on the Canadien's sweaters, and the journalist told him it stood for habitants, or habs for short. The name stuck.

Of course, the H doesn't stand for habs. It stands for hockey. as in Club de Hockey Canadien, the full name of the original team.

No problem. I actually remember answering that question back when this site first started. I think the thread might have been pruned though.
