(Jul 17) tsn.ca - The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed free agent forward Tom Fitzgerald.

Financial terms were not released but its believed the 33-year old agreed to a two year deal with the club.

Fitzgerald began his career with the New York Islanders in 1986 before moving on to the expansion Florida Panthers in 1993. He helped the Panthers advance to the Stanley Cup finals in 1996, where he recorded four goals and eight points in 22 playoff games.

In 1995-96 he was tied for second in the NHL in shorthanded goals with six and he received two first-place votes while placing ninth overall in balloting for the Selke Trophy as the league's top defensive forward.

Fitzgerald. was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in 1998 before being claimed by the Nashville Predators later that summer.

After playing a franchise high 307 games with the Predators, Fitzgerald was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in March for a fourth round draft pick in 2003. The 33 year old became an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

In 78 games last season, Fitzgerald counted eight goals and 20 points. In 891 career NHL games he has recorded 124 goals and 161 assists for 285 points.
