Dumontfan's thread (http://www.chasingstanley.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55) got me think (yes duck and cover!)
Let's list the trademarks of a great rivalry, to separate it from hotly contested games, or games with some controversy (although those both help build great rivalries).
1. The fans of the opposing teams know the names of all the veteran players from both teams, not just the goons and superstars.
2. When your team loses to it's rival, you feel disgusted for the next couple of days and circle their next game against them.
Can you think of any more?

Hmm...
No matter what the circumstances you always find yourself rooting against the rival.
Like for instance, I didn't find myself rooting for Toronto anytime last year. Even when they played Philly! : )

Very True! I used to feel that way about the Habs when they'd consistently embarass the Leafs, and last season's cup final between Jersey and Colorado I really wanted both teams to lose. :D

I actually spend alot of time on Bruins boards, just because I like to hear people complain about what their management is doing, and it ruins my whole week when I hear about something good on there. Like it torques me to no end to hear that Allison is talking to management again...I hope that they will not budge. I also check Bruin scores during the season hoping that they loose. I do not know if the Canes and the Bruins would qualify to the extent of Boston and Motreal, but being a fan of a newer team (I was not a big Whaler fan), I think that them beating us in the playoffs really started it for me.
I think that alot of people here in Carolina also consider Philly a rival because we have swapped so many players, especially the ever hated Primeau (I actually have nothing against him, but this area does {they even booo the guys brother}).

I have a pretty good example of what a rivalry is all about. Here are the penalties that took place in ONE period of the Rangers Vs. Flyers Game:
Penalties:
Mckenna, Nyr (fighting major), 6:26; J Boulerice, Phi (fighting major), 6:26; Purinton, Nyr (fighting major, misconduct), 6:26; C Mcallister, Phi (fighting major, misconduct), 6:26; Hlavac, Phi (hooking), 8:52; Scott, Nyr served by Murray (slashing, fighting major), 14:33; J Boulerice, Phi (fighting major), 14:33; Stock, Nyr (fighting major, misconduct), 14:33; Lessard, Phi (fighting major, misconduct), 14:33; Hlavac, Phi (tripping), 16:16.

As I was saying earlier, this quote will make my day:
"I'm sad to say that I've played my last game for the Boston Bruins," Allison told The Boston Globe. "They offered me less than their last offer, which only shows me that they had no intention of signing me in the first place."
Good job MOC!!!
:D :D :D
