Heard a report on the radio this morning explaining why Carolina's building, the ESA is so loud. Apparently the building has placed microphones around strategic locations of the building. As the crowd starts to get noisy, they take that crowd noise and re-broadcast it through the PA speakers in the Arena.

Now THAT explains it all :)

I had a feeling that something was up with that. The first game against Toronto there were 1000 empty seats but they still managed to have this constant roar.

I wonder if the NHL has any rules about it, or will other teams adopt (ie. steal) Carolinas idea.

If that's true... that is REALLY lame.

I've never heard that, nor have i seen any extra mikes hanging from the ceiling, and trust me, I was pretty high up for some of the games. When the arena was designed, it was designed with acoustics in mind, I have been to several concerts there and it does get very loud because of the accoustics.

I think that is pretty lame that they need to use mikes to make it louder, after all it only seats a little over
18,000 I heard. The Joe seats a bit over 20,000 so I can't imagine that arena being louder unless they use the PA system.

I can't believe that, why would they spend all that money just to have a louder arena? I could understand the sound bouncing off the walls, but to amplify the crowd noise is insane. You're taking a chance of your players getting hurt by not hearing the refs whistles.

One thing we will never need in Madison Square Garden is a PA system that makes the crowd louder.

If that is indeed what Carolina does, then that is pretty lame.
